Second Circular
Dear Colleagues,
this circular is the last one before the upcoming meeting, which will be held in
Burg Liebenzell, Germany, August 16 - 20, 2000.
This workshop is planned to discuss the present status of the R&D and of the preparations for the Engineering Array, the schedule for the installation of the prototype telescope, the detailed plans for the first measurements and the physics programme of the EA as well as the future work for and with the full hybrid experiment.
Scientific Programme:
The representatives of all groups actively involved in the work for the Pierre Auger FD have been asked to send proposals to the organizing committee - their responses and many other proposals have been used to develop a preliminary programme, which includes as much discussion time as possible.
See the workshops web page below.
We will have four full working days. The scientific programme will start on Wednesday, August 16, at 16:00 and will end on Sunday, August 20, at 12:00. The Wednesday and Sunday sessions will contain important issues.
Therefore, all participants are expected to arrive at Burg Liebenzell on the early afternoon of August 16, and stay until August 20. after lunch.
In addition to the 50+ people lecture hall for the plenary sessions the castle offers smaller rooms for group meetings in the afternoons or evenings.
The organizers strongly encourage the formation of working groups during the meeting.

Venue and Transport:
"Burg Liebenzell" is a medieval castle situated on a hill (450m above sea level) next to the small town of Bad Liebenzell in the northern part of the Black Forest - about 180 km south of Frankfurt, 50 km south-east of Karlsruhe and 40 km west of Stuttgart.
International flights may best be booked to Frankfurt.
The railway station (Frankfurt(M)Flughafen) at the airport ("Fernbahnhof") has frequent connections to Karlsruhe, from there you can continue to Pforzheim and Bad Liebenzell. Also the Stuttgart airport offers frequent train connections to Bad Liebenzell via Stuttgart main station and Pforzheim. From the train station in Bad Liebenzell we will provide a shuttle service - only for participants who notify us about their arrival until August 15.
If you get lost - phone us for rescue.
from Bad Liebenzell dial 92 45 0 , else area code : 07052 national , +49 7052 international
You can look up train connections in the internet : http://bahn.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/en .
We will be happy to help you with your travel plans if you mail your flight details to us.
For those who plan to come by car: Bad Liebenzell is situated 20 km south of Pforzheim which is right on the Autobahn A8 between Karlsruhe and Stuttgart. At Pforzheim follow the road B463 which leads to Bad Liebenze ll, Calw and Nagold. At Bad Liebenzell a small road leads to the castle Burg Liebenzell, which is to the west just above the town.
Accommodation:
Burg Liebenzell is an international conference center which has housed more than 90.000 people from 120 nations. It will accommodate 55 workshop participants in single and two-bed rooms. Several rooms share common showers on the cor ridors. We will house all external participants at the castle. Some colleagues from Karlsruhe will have to stay in hotel rooms in Bad Liebenzell due to the limited space at the castle
Please note that the castle is an international (youth) meeting and education center - not a hotel. It is not available to us before or after the workshop.
Therefore, if you want to come earlier or stay longer, you will need hotel accomodation. We will be happy to assist you.
Tourist and Weather Information:
Burg Liebenzell was built by the Counts of Eberstein at the beginning of the 12. century. It is situated at an altitude of 450 m in the middle of a forest with a nice view into the valley and down to Bad Liebenzell, which is in abou t 20 minutes walking distance.
There is plenty of opportunity for walking and hiking in the immediate vicinity. Be sure to bring appropriate shoes.
In addition to the lecture hall and study group rooms at the castle there is a table tennis room (bring your equipment) and a beer and wine cellar for evening meetings.
Bad Liebenzell offers many possibilities for swimming (including a famous thermal spa and sauna world), tennis, squash, horse riding, golf, fishing, and many other sports.
Train connections e.g. to Heidelberg or Baden-Baden are frequent and take less that 2 hours.
The weather in this part of Germany is usually fine in August with temperatures ranging from 20C to 30C. Note that evenings can be cooler. It is wise to bring a light sweater. Some rain showers or thunderstorms may occur - be prepared.
